Eagles’ DeSean Jackson helps liven up blandwagon at Pro Bowl

Source: Philadelphia Daily News (Original Article)

MIAMI - The perfect Pro Bowl metaphor appeared just before the opening kickoff, when fighter jets shrieked by in the obligatory big-event flyover at Sun Life Stadium.
At a night game, in a misty rain.
The noise was terrific, but nobody saw much.
Similarly, bunches of NFL stars were gathered on the field, even with the 14 would-be participants from the Super Bowl-bound Saints and the Colts sidelined. But the presence of so much talent didn’t generate much in the way of memories, in the course of a 41-34 AFC victory.
You can move the game from Hawaii to Miami, change it from the week after the Super Bowl to the week before, but you can’t make players really play hard for the glory of the AFC or NFC, or make them risk serious injury in an all-star game.
In making those changes, the league got the (mostly) filled stands it wanted - 70,697 people, the most at such a contest since 1959. But it didn’t get an electric atmosphere, or a vastly improved product. It did get Honolulu to pay $8 million to get the game back for the next 2 years.
Of course, if you were the Eagles’ DeSean Jackson, first time on the big all-star stage, and you caught a pair of touchdown passes last night, it wasn’t such a wasted evening.
"That was awesome, for a first Pro Bowl game," said Jackson, who finished with six catches for 101 yards. "I was still able to put on a show - we all put on a show."
Earlier, Jackson told a sideline reporter: "My first touchdown, I had to keep the ball. I’m just out here having a great time, and at the same time, I’m trying to put out a little effort . . . It’s only my second year and I’m here with all the great players, and it’s an honor to be here."
Jackson’s second touchdown came on a 58-yard bubble screen hookup with his Eagles quarterback, Donovan McNabb.
McNabb couldn’t avoid being asked about his future by sideline flights from Gold Coast to Rockhampton reporter Michele Tafoya. She wanted to know …continue reading

Second Wizards player faces gun charges

An attorney for Washington Wizards guard Javaris Crittenton says the player will plead guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge — 10 days after teammate Gilbert Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge.

Crittenton was charged Monday with two misdemeanors — possession of an unregistered firearm and attempted carrying a pistol without a license.

Crittenton’s lawyer, Peter H. White, says prosecutors plan to drop the second charge if Crittenton pleads guilty. He says Crittenton brought a legally owned, unloaded handgun to Washington “only because he legitimately feared for his life.” He says the player accepts responsibility for his conduct.

Arenas pleaded guilty on Jan. 15 to a felony gun charge connected to a locker-room argument that is believed to have involved Crittenton.

A beast on D-line, Warren Sapp became NFL legend in the ’00s

Tenth installment in a month-long series about the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s.

It was his former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, Tony Dungy, who steered Warren Sapp on the road to greatness when he made him the prototype, 3-technique defensive tackle and lynchpin for Dungy’s Tampa 2 defense.

Sapp, a seven-time Pro Bowler, is considered by many peers and league analysts as arguably the most dominant defensive tackle ever to play. Unlike the outside sack artists who relied on their speed to threaten blockers and quarterbacks, Sapp was an every-down demolition man who blew up plays from the inside out, demanding double and sometimes triple teams as an explosive game-wrecker.

NFL’S ALL-DECADE SERIES: Top players at every position

“Tony Dungy put me on this path when he first took over the head coaching job in Tampa Bay,” says Sapp, now an NFL Network analyst.

“He said ‘You have to stack Pro Bowls, Defensive Player of the Year and a world championship.’ And when you look around the league, there’s only six people in this modern era of football that are in that group. That’s the thing I’m most proud of. That’s my body of work.”

Sapp spent nine seasons with the Buccaneers, winning a 2002 Super Bowl championship before finishing his distinguished 13-season career with the Oakland Raiders. The former University of Miami standout, who had 96½ sacks in his career, averaged 11 sacks a season between 1996 and 2000, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1999.

“There’s only six people who have equal to or greater than what I have,” Sapp says.

NBA Betting Odds: Lakers Healthy Again And Rolling

Source: Casino Gambling Web (Original Article)

The Los Angeles Lakers came into this season as the betting favorites to win another NBA championship. Kobe Bryant and his teammates knew there would be some bumps along the road. Early on, the team has dealt with injuries.

This past week, however, the Lakers Pau Gasol returned to the lineup and the team picked up right where they left off before he was hurt. Los Angeles trounced a Clippers team that had beaten them just a week before, and they hold the best record in the league.

Cleveland had pulled even with the Lakers, but has struggled in their past few games. Meanwhile, the Lakers are again hitting on all cylinders and currently own a three game lead over Cleveland in the race for the best record in the league.

Boston, another team that was supposed to challenge for the title, has also had problems keeping all of their players healthy. The Celtics have an aging team, and cannot afford to lose key players such as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, who both have missed time due to injury.

In the West, San Antonio is emerging as a team that could eventually challenge the Lakers. The Spurs have been playing the best ball of any of the contenders in the past month, and they seem to be finally piecing all of their new additions into the flow of their offense.

There are still several months left in a lengthy regular season, but the signs are pointing towards Los Angeles again being the team to beat heading into the playoffs. Another title would bring Bryant within one of Michael Jordan, but it is still too early to start thinking about that type of history.

MacPHERSON CREDITS MEHMET

Source: Sportinglife.com (Original Article)

St Mirren boss Gus MacPherson credited Billy Mehmet with a hat-trick as they dumped Alloa out of the Active Nation Scottish Cup.

Saints’ opener in their 3-1 went down as an own-goal after the striker’s header hit the post and bounced off goalkeeper David Crawford before crossing the line.

The plucky Second Division side levelled through Mark Brown but Mehmet struck either side of the break to ensure there would be no doubt about the Clydesdale Bank Premier League side’s progression to the fifth round - even if there was some doubt over who scored the first goal.

MacPherson said: “I wouldn’t take it away from him.

“If anyone is brave enough to do that, they can try but I’ll be giving the hat-trick to him.

“He took his goals well and we know what he is capable of. He’s very composed in front of goal and showed that today.

“The third came at the right time for us and gave us a bit of breathing space. It doesn’t matter how you get there in the cups you just need to get into the next round.”

MacPherson believes Alloa deserve plenty of credit for their efforts even if there was to be no shock at St Mirren Park today.

He added: “We always knew it would be difficult but we made life difficult for ourselves. Fair play to Alloa, they passed the ball better than us and created two or three good opportunities.

“The most import thing is getting into the next round and winning the game.”

Alloa manager Allan Maitland admitted afterwards that Mehmet was just too much for his players to handle.

He said: “I thought Billy Mehmet was excellent last week against Kilmarnock and was the best player on the park and was again today.

“He took his three goals really well, particularly the second one.”

But the Wasps boss was also keen to heap praise on his own players, adding: “Our players acquitted themselves really well.

“We came here to play and try to frustrate cheap domstic flights from Hobart to Brisbane St Mirren for as long as possible. …continue reading

Nets still on the skids

Source: Albany Times Union (Original Article)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Andrew Bogut scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and the Milwaukee Bucks scored a rare road win with a 98-76 decision over the woeful New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night.

Carlos Delfino added 17 points as the Bucks won for only the fourth time in 15 road games.Yi Jianlian had 22 points to lead New Jersey, which lost for the 31st time in 34 games this season. Chris Douglas-Roberts added 12 points. In other games: Jason Terry scored 26 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 22 and Dallas overcame a slow start to hand Detroit its 10th consecutive loss, 98-93. The Pistons, who last won Dec. 12, hadn’t dropped 10 in a row since the end of the 1993-94 season. They lost their final 13 games that season.Notes: Miami traded point guard Chris Quinn to New Jersey, a move that could be a precursor to Rafer Alston’s return to South Florida. Alston agreed to a buyout agreement with the Nets earlier Tuesday, and two people familiar with the situation told the Associated Press that the guard is hoping to sign with the Heat later this week. If Alston clears waivers Thursday at 6 p.m., he could sign with any team. … Cleveland’s Jamario Moon is expected to miss at least three weeks with a left abdominal strain. Moon, a former Albany Patroon, signed as a free agent last summer from Miami.
