The 2010 Gay TV Pilot Round-Up!

Ever wonder how TV shows are born? Well, when a Mommy TV show and a Daddy TV show love each other very much, they start to kiss and rub their bodies together, and then they…

Wait, scratch that. Wrong explanation.

The truth is, all year long, broadcast and cable networks hear pitches from writers and producers, which they then commission into actual scripts. Every winter and spring, they order some of these scripts to "pilot," which means the show is cast and a "pilot" episode is shot.

This does not mean that the show is necessarily ever going to make it on air. Pilots are ordered precisely so the networks can decide whether they want to invest in them. From the pilot, they can see how the show looks, whether or not it "works," and whether casting changes are necessary. Case in point, last year Fox passed on Ron Moore’s sci fi drama Virtuality which included a gay couple.

Many more pilots are shot than ever become TV series — though the number of pilots ordered has fallen considerably in recent years as the networks try to save money.

Still, pilots are how networks pick their future schedules. Wondering what pilots are being put together right now that might be of interest to gay viewers next fall and winter? Here are a few that sound intriguing:

Perfect Couples (NBC): Needless to say, the success of Modern Family is having a big impact on next year’s shows. One obvious rip-off similarly-themed series is this pilot recently ordered by NBC about three couples each with a “different definition” of perfection. No word on whether any of the couples are same-sex ones, but given the networks lack of GLBT diversity, PC represents the perfect opportunity to fix that. .

It Takes of Village (ABC): Another Modern Family rip-off homage, this half-hour show tells the story of two exes jointly raising a 15-year-old. The original pilot had cheap flights from Canberra to Coffs Harbour the male parent being gay and living …continue reading

While the fully recouped “Hair” and “West Side Story” hum along on Broadway, full-scale musical revivals took a blow this month when “Finian’s Rainbow” and “Ragtime” closed abruptly, losing their entire capitalization after short runs. The radically pared-down “A Little Night Music,” on the other hand, performs at 100% capacity thanks in large part to Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury, a starry combo that has made some auds forget, or simply not care, that there are only eight musicians in the pit. Waiting in the Broadway wings is an equally reduced “La Cage aux Folles,” set to open in April, with Kelsey Grammer’s marquee power justifying the $137 ducat for a Cagelle chorus of six and a band of eight. The incoming “Promises Promises” — cast of 27, orchestra of 18 — joins “Hair” and “WSS” (and LCT’s gorgeously staged “South Pacific” with its discreetly miked 30-piece orchestra) as full-scale offerings in an increasingly bare-bones world of Broadway revivals. They are clearly the exceptions. And Los Angeles theater offers a similar story of diminution. Vampire Weekend Make History With #1 Billboard Debut

Written on January 21, 2010 – 1:37 am | by marychick

Source: MTV.com (Original Article)

Contra, the band’s second album, sold close to 124,000 copies in its first week to debut at #1, besting runner-up Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed a Dream by nearly 50,000 albums. Released on XL Recordings, Contra is the first independent album to debut at #1 since Pearl Jam’s Backspacer bowed at the top of the charts back in September (that album was released on the band’s own Monkeywrench label but sold exclusively through mega-retailer Target, independent stores and online). Contra is also the highest indie-rock debut since both the Shins and the Arcade Fire released albums — Wincing the Night Away and Neon Bible — that opened at #2 back in 2007. It’s the first #1 album in XL’s 20-year history, not to mention the label’s highest debut since Thom Yorke’s The Eraser bowed at #2 in 2006.

History aside, the rest of the Billboard top 10 looks very similar to last week’s chart. Boyle is at #2, while last week’s chart champ, Ke$ha’s Animal, is #3, with sales of just under 67,000 copies. Lady Gaga’s The Fame is #4, with sales of almost 64,000 copies, and Alicia Keys’ Element of Freedom comes in at #5, with sales of about 48,000 copies.

Gaga’s The Fame Monster EP follows at #6 (36,000 copies sold), Mary J. Blige’s Stronger lands at #7 (35,000), Taylor Swift’s Fearless is #8 (33,000), the soundtrack to “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” is #9 (33,000), and the Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D. rounds out the top 10 (32,000 copies).

Other debuts on next week’s chart include Omarion’s Ollusion, which lands at #19 (more than 19,000 copies sold). OK Go’s Of the Blue Colour of the Sky is #39 (11,000), and O.A.R.’s live album Rain or Shine appears cheap flights Coffs Harbour to Sydney at #48, with sales of more than 9,000 copies.

TALISMAN’s MARCEL JACOB Memorial Show Postponed

Written on January 3, 2010 – 10:12 pm | by marychick

Source: Jan. 4, 2010 - Blabbermouth.net (Original Article)

The previously announced “One Last Night With Talisman” concert — featuring the remaining members of TALISMAN performing one last time in memory of their dear friend (and TALISMAN bassist) Marcel Jacob who tragically passed away in July last year — has been postponed. Singer Jeff Scott Soto says that “the guys were just re-thinking the best way to pay tribute to Marcel” and would advise of new plans as soon as possible.

The “One Last Night With Talisman” concert was previously scheduled to take place at the Pub Anchor in Stockholm, Sweden on January 30.

Marcel Jacob was a Swedish musician, best known as the bassist in the hard rock bands TALISMAN and LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM.

In 1978, he formed the band RISING FORCE together with guitarist Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Four years later, Jacob joined the band FORCE, which later changed its name to EUROPE, replacing John Levén, who took Jacob’s place in RISING FORCE. During his time in FORCE, Jacob wrote the song “Black Journey for My Soul” together with vocalist Joey Tempest. The song was eventually included on EUROPE’s second album, “Wings of Tomorrow”, re-titled “Scream of Anger”. After spending three months in FORCE, Jacob traded places with John Levén again, who apparently had issues with Malmsteen.

In 1987, Jacob played on the album “Total Control”, the first solo LP released by EUROPE guitarist John Norum. Jacob also co-wrote several of the songs included on that album.

Two years later he formed the band TALISMAN together with vocalist Jeff Scott Soto. Throughout the years TALISMAN was Jacob’s major project and the band released several studio and live albums until 2007.

Jacob died on July 21, 2009. He was 45 years old. TALISMAN vocalist Jeff Scott Soto stated about Marcel’s passing: “It is with deep regret and remorse I, along with fellow members of TALISMAN, am announcing our brother, longtime colleague and overall greatest musician flights from Sydney to Hobart we’ve ever played with, Marcel Jacob, is …continue reading
